Life Without Internet

In 1997 I move to Chico. A month after moving to Chico I had DSL. Since that time I’ve always had internet in my home.

Not any more. Six months ago I wrote a piece about using the neighbors Wi-Fi. Those WiFi hotspots have since moved or been locked up.

When I say “I’m unplugged” I mean, I do not have internet on demand. I do work on the internet all day long. Yes, I do maintain my webpage. All these activities require a live connection. The key is I don’t have it at home.

Before I lost my connection a typical day would include me getting off work and spending 2, 3, 4 sometimes 5 hours after work in front of the computer surfing the net. Not a total waste. I kept up on many blogs, wrote e-mails.. etc.

At the same time it wouldn’t be unheard of spending 2 to 3 hours playing Warcraft 3.

Benefits of Being Unplugged

First, thing I did was buy a subscription to T-Mobile’s which has access points in almost every Starbucks. Second, thing I did was look for more people involved activities. Third, I’ve started reading more. You’d be amazed what some books contain but you’ll never know unless you read.

The internet can consume you, don’t let it.
