Experience.. or lack of – Part 2
In my last posting I tried to post on getting a job without experience. Last time I got sidetracked by some excellent articles on how to get a job.
Mark Adornetto talks about the “No job without Experience, No Experience without a Job” Paradox. According to him there are 3 areas prospective employers look at :
- Experience
- Certifications
- Training
Each area is an indicator of future job performance. One indicator alone cannot stand on it’s own as a measure of future job performance they must be weighted against and with each other.
Mark 7 suggestions on getting experience:
- Do volunteer work to get experience
- Do an internship
- Do your own projects
- Get “hands on” training
- Make sure your job search tools are in perfect working condition
- If you are targeting particular companies, find out what training programs THEY favor
- When applying for a job, you can add quite a bit of weight to your candidacy if you express a passion for what you do
Scott Boyd at JobSeekersAdvice has a different approach, he believes in the school of hard Knox. His theory is to get a job in the Industry you are trying to get into and get any job, even if it’s janitorial work. Then work up from there – I’m not sure I like his philosophy.
Dan Blacharski at IT world has the best advice yet. His approach is to get an internship. Companies hire heavily from their internship pool, with interns getting decent pay it’s a win-win scenario for both the employee and the employer.
After doing research, it turns out for me to get a job I need to find a company willing to take a gamble and hire me or find an internship in my desired area of study. ..So anyone out there looking to hire someone with a BSBA in Management Information Systems?
